Enjoyable, Tangible Activities

Picture
I attended a socio-economically and racially diverse high school in California. During the college application process, I noticed the disparity in access to college. It felt wrong. My public school’s college counseling program was under-resourced. At this point, I recognized my white privilege, my economic privilege.

At Yale, I haven’t had to bear the burden of thinking about tuition payments or my family’s financial situation. For a while, my parents hid our family’s financial information from me. Still, my parents grew up in poverty, and they passed their frugality on to me. I do worry about spending.

Looking toward this summer, I am searching for enjoyable, tangible activities. Possibly volunteer opportunities back home in California. I hadn’t previously thought about the fact that some of my Yale peers have to find summer jobs to make money and fulfill the contribution.

When it comes to college students’ career choices, I used to look down upon the idea of going into a job for money. I was critical because I don’t have to support my parents and siblings after college. I’m privileged in this respect because I do not need to make a lot of money. My immediate family now has money to fall back on, and I feel I have their support.
