Money is Time Here

Picture
I am pretty well off. There is an elite at Yale of which I am not a part, but am a bit jealous of. There is a way in which I am afforded comforts here that others aren't. Money is time here.

In a club in which I am very involved, officers pay for club expenses with their own money. I can't think of any example in which a person without significant resources has even run for office. This club used to go to Union League Cafe every week as a social dinner, but if you couldn't afford to pay, you were just excluded. We have lunch with professors at Mory's and the expensive lunch prices add up.

Living in a summer community of Yalies with Yale students of different incomes opened my eyes to class disparities over the summer. Minor things like grocery trips became sources of fighting because students couldn't afford the same items. The people who were trying to save money for the year while they worked and lived didn't have nearly the same social budget--significantly impacting our group dynamics.

Academics require time, and making/saving money requires time. This calculus is zero-sum. Purchasing textbooks right away versus delaying to order used books online or not spending time fighting with Yale bureaucracy impacts my academic experience.

I prefer to remain anonymous. While I believe this cause is extremely important, I fear consequences from future employers.
