No need for loans?

Picture
I take out loans to cover my student effort contribution. If I didn’t do this and had to work a full-time job, there is no way I would be able to pursue the same extra-curriculars that I do now. I’m in an improv group (Just Add Water) and a comedy-late-night sketch show (The Good Show). These creative outlets have been at the core of my Yale experience. They mean so much to me and I have grown so much from being able to do them. I’ve become more confident, become a better writer and performer, and made my closest friends through them. In many ways, these extra-curriculars have been more transformative for me than many of my academic experiences.

Yale prides itself in creating a diverse student body. However, I’ve noticed that this diversity often is lacking in activities outside of the classroom. I’ve realized that my extracurricular groups are rather homogenous in terms of race and socioeconomic status compared to Yale as a whole. There is no doubt in my mind that this homogeneity is related to the student effort contribution. Students who have to work more hours are forced to curtail other commitments. It is unfair that students facing economic pressures do not have the same opportunities as their peers to explore all that Yale has to offer.
