Talk about experiences

Picture
If we don't talk about our financial status, we can’t talk about experiences that are related to that. Financial status is so deeply wrapped up in our life experiences that not being able to talk about it means we are cut off from each other in important ways. For example, I was able to ease into freshman year, dip my toes into a lot of different extracurriculars and find things I was really passionate about. I was able to try things and drop them because I had time to give—all because I didn't have to get a job right away.

At Yale I am constantly interacting with people who have different backgrounds and experiences than me. Not only do I learn from those interactions, but they are part of making relationships with people I care about. I remember when, during a conversation with my suite mate, we both felt a disconnect when we realized that I was not on financial aid while she was on full financial aid. I’m against the SIC because it creates unnecessary divisions between me and my friends. I would rather be honest about my financial status, but Yale policies make it more difficult to have real conversations about class.
